Shotokan basics...


Kihon

The basic principles of Karate are punching (zuki), blocking (uke), striking (uchi) and kicking (geri). These basic techniques are called 'Kihon' - basic! All of these techniques are performed by using one of the shotokan stances (dachi).

Kumite

Kumite (sparring) is training with a partner to practice the application of Kihon. There are several patterns of sparring drills:

Kata

Kata and all of its principles are far to big to list here, but basically Kata is a set of pre-arranged moves for defence and attack. Kata is a way of teaching technique using a specified sequence against imaginary opponents. Kata uses all of the principles of shotokan - Kihon with the correct use of power, speed, co-ordination, timing and breathing.

There are around 27 different kata's in Shotokan karate. There are eight kata's to learn from 10th Kyu to 1st Dan, which are:

'Bunkai' is looking at the application of Kata, and understanding the true meaning of the form - required practice for shodan grades!!
